Hellenic Pasteur Institute

Established in 1920, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (IPH), is private and non-profit organization supervised by the Ministry of Development, has a long tradition in translational biomedical research, with focus on Infectious Diseases and on Public Health Services for the Ministry of Health.

The IPH’s main objectives are:

Basic and applied biomedical research with emphasis on human and animal infectious diseases with focus on Infectious Diseases, Immunology and Neurobiology. These activities aim to improve human health and well-being through recognized biomedical research, materialized by advanced technologies and translated towards the clinic through innovative diagnostic, prophylactic and therapeutic approaches.
Public Health. The IPH has a strategic role in the investigation of outbreaks, epidemics and/or pandemics in Greece, providing services to the Ministry of Health through the Diagnostic Centre, specialized on the rapid detection and diagnosis of bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases. The IPH’s Reference Laboratories contribute to the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases e.g. under the current COVID19 pandemic with the Coronaviruses Reference Laboratory.
Vaccine Unit with a modern Quality Control Laboratory provides vaccines to the Public Sector and assessment controls on vaccines and biological products for the Ministry of Health and of the National Drug Organization.

1. National Influenza Reference Laboratory, Southern Greece. Detection/ isolation and typing of influenza viruses from clinical samples collected in Southern Greece during the winter influenza surveillance period. Standard methods for influenza virus isolation and typing as well as PCR based methods are employed. Clinical samples are received from hospitals, health centres and a sentinel network organised by the KEEL in southern Greece. Laboratory results from the influenza microbiological surve

National Reference Laboratories recognized by WHO

5. National Reference Laboratory for Leishmaniasis: The aim of the National Laboratory for Leishmaniasis is to monitor the frequency, origin, and type of leishmaniases in Greece. Leishmaniasis is diagnosed by using standard methods such as detection of parasites in smears, culture, histologic sections, or by detecting serum specific antibodies (IFAT, ELISA) or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of lesion biopsy specimens, bone marrow, or peripheral blood. The samples are received from hospitals

Regional Reference Laboratory

4. National Reference Centre for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NRCNG): The NRCNG operates in the Laboratory of Bacteriology of the H.P.I. since 1987, upon authorisation of the Greek Ministry of Health (?1/5755/15-6-1987) to which is reporting in an annual basis. Principal goal of the NRCNG is the performance of continuous surveillance of the epidemiological and antibiotic resistance trends of gonococcal infection in Greece. To that end: (a) A quite effective surveillance system for monitoring epidemiol
