Institut Pasteur de Côte d'Ivoire
Institut Pasteur de Côte d'Ivoire (IPCI) is a national public institution established in 1972. It operates under the administrative and technical supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. IPCI has been a member of the Pasteur Network since 1978. A 2006 interministerial decree between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Ministry of Health enables exemplary collaboration in the fight against epidemics. IPCI operates across two sites: COCODY and ADIOPODOUME.
IPCI has a fourfold mission:
Research
Training
Surveillance of priority diseases
Services
The Institute is distinguished by its highly specialized human resources in a wide range of fields, allowing it to be fully integrated into the national health and research systems. It hosts 20 national reference centers for the control of communicable diseases and coordinates the national network of health and research laboratories. IPCI is also a member of the West African Health Organization (WAHO) laboratory network under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and houses several World Health Organization (WHO)-recognized reference laboratories.
Côte d’Ivoire monitors 23 priority communicable diseases, and IPCI is responsible for the diagnosis and research of 19 of them.
IPCI's research themes include:
Vector-borne diseases
Hemorrhagic fevers
Emerging and re-emerging diseases
Antimicrobial resistance
Virus-related cancers
Neglected tropical diseases
The Institute hosts several technological platforms and, since 2018, has housed the regional biobank for ECOWAS countries. A Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory is expected to become operational soon within the Center for High-Risk Infectious Pathogens (CEPRIS).
