Institut Pasteur de la Guyane
The Institut Pasteur de la Guyane has been in Cayenne since 1940 and works in four areas : biomedical research, supporting Public Health, education and training.
The research themes of the Institute target zoonotic, vector and emerging diseases integrating the biodiversity and interfaces of the equatorial and ecosystem of the Amazonian plateau of French Guyana.
The research axes aim at understanding the emergences by the :
Knowledge of pathogens (viruses, parasites, bacteria…)
Knowledge of vectors (mosquitos…)
Knowledge of reservoirs (bats…)
Knowledge of the environment (water…)
The Institut Pasteur de la Guyane approaches research in an integrated manner thanks to the complementarity of multidisciplinary teams such as virologists, entomologists, parasitologists, physicians, veterinarian and epidemiologists. The research at the IP de la Guyane has three strategic axes :
Focus on arboviruses which are studied using vectors studies and epidemiological approaches.
Focus on the biodiversity of viruses and their reservoirs as well as on the understanding of the mechanisms of emergence and re emergence which are analysed from genomic, immunological, proteomic angles using also bio-informatics modelling.
An axis on malaria is tackled using a vectorial approach supplemented by molecular research on parasite resistance.
The aim is to use our results to help public health authorities to adjust, on the basis of scientific evidence, their programs to control infectious and emerging diseases.
